Vision™ Oxygenator Air Challenge Study

In an independent laboratory test, the Vision® Oxygenator System was compared to equivalent membranes in their ability to handle gaseous emboli.  Each device was placed into a circuit where a proprietary digital imaging system was utilized to optically assess gaseous emboli activity at the outlet of the oxygenators.  Utilizing a centrifugal pump to generate clinically significant flow rates, boluses of air were injected into the venous inlet of the oxygenators.  Monitoring the arterial side of the device in one-quarter millisecond intervals (.25 ms), the digital imaging system recorded emboli exiting the oxygenators.  The digital imaging system was programmed to isolate and identify the various micron sizes appearing at the outlet.  The results show emboli ranging from 20 micron to 120 micron passing through many devices, while the Vision Oxygenator System virtually eliminated the undesired air.
